I want everyone to know that I know I sent this out with a typo in the last sentence and it is KILLING me!!! That should have said “Don’t let *my* alternative appearance fool you — I still only believe in the kind of beauty you can buy" — not "me" !!!

I dunno, I kinda l read the typo like it was coming from a farmer from Northern England…it works! Lol!

As an aside, do you prefer to be called “Jessica” or “Jess” by commenters?

". . . the standard of beauty now is basically just 'stimulates the economy.'" Well said. That's the thing—the fashion thing, the tech thing, the car thing, the every thing.

"...and thus absorbs no personal or political risk by un-prettying herself in this particular way" DAMN. You nailed something I have been feeling for a very long time in varying contexts. Tell "pretty is over" to the women in Iran cutting off their own hair where the cost is threat to their life. Thank you for your service Jessica!!

As someone who has had invisible blonde eyebrows my whole life, I thought I'd be happy to say goodbye to the Instagram eyebrows fad . Unfortunately you are correct that the trend is just another way to demonstrate "a commitment to consuming."

It’s probably my age (31) but I am more exhausted than interested in new fashion and beauty trends. (To an extent...I’m not totally immune. I still bought some 90s style claw clips for my hair.) But I used to care a lot more and feel excited and engaged with changing my look. The idea of changing feels much more laborious now. Haha. I think this is a good thing?

"The product possibilities are endless — and the exact opposite of what consumers already have on hand." Is so accurate. I see a parallel with "heroin chic" physique being reported on as a trend... How many women have gotten BBLs and done 5 glue days a week at the gym to look like a Kardashian only for them to sway to a new definition of desirable? What better way to keep trend-followng women on their toes and spending money.

(btw no shade to people with pale eyebrows. down with beauty culture though.)
