i truly hate "it's not that deep" justifications. like.... it's "not that deep" and yet you're dedicated enough to this ideal that you're willing to rearrange your bones, tissues, fluids, cells, etc to meet it?? ok
Ppl were always so rude about me getting an art history degree but it’s always so relevant!!!! All you have to do to see that beauty standards are 100% constructed is go to a museum. Round bellies and high hairlines really popped off in 1500s in the Netherlands but where are they now??
Fucking brilliant, and the link between beauty standards / eugenics / Nazism bears repeating in this political climate! You’ve quoted Naomi Wolf here which is going to make the following recommendation seem extremely ironic* but I HIGHLY recommend reading Naomi Klein’s book “Doppelgänger” - she further explores eugenics and Nazism, in particular how it relates to the modern day wellness (and anti-vax) movements! Doppelgänger is brilliant on so many levels, I wish everyone would read it!
Thank you, always, for your fearlessness in delivering such astute observations, Jessica! I recommend your writing to friends all the time, and am so grateful to have access to your voice in these times!
*Throughout the rest of her book, Klein also untangles her experience of being confused with Wolf, particularly as Wolf falls further down the alt-right conspiratorial rabbit hole… it’s a wild tale.
"American society has the moral code of a Disney cartoon". My new favorite quote.
hehe
gonna send this to everyone who’s ever told me “it’s not that deep” when I talk about beauty culture

Excellent: Funny, thoughtful…and scary.
Dr. Rajagopal "balance has been disrupted" quote makes her sound like she advised on The Substance!

Steve Buscemi would like a word.
Where's the haha emoji when you need it?!
