A guest column from Jared Holst of Brands Mean A Lot.
Reading this I cant help but think of this Mitchell and Webb sketch: https://youtu.be/-a1pYyt8NTU - It's tragic that through some kind of motivation of gender inclusivity, and a battling against the idea that using skincare or cosmetic products is feminine therefore bad - the market is creating new insecurities for men. Men *should* reject the idea that their unmodified body isnt enough, but for the right reasons
the substack crossover of my dreams 👏🏼🤌🏼
This is pretty much unrelated to the article, but I just discovered a brand called... wait for it... Erase Your Face.
Thought I'd share.
Thanks so much for sharing this! So thought provoking and feel like the discrepancy between the product offerings is such a clear indicator that so much of women’s beauty products are either marketing only or unnecessary or both!
Both my husband and I laughed at the description of typical “masculine marketing”. His comment - “ah how fragile masculinity is! We just reinforce it at every moment” 😂
This is great! A chain of department stores in Australia have been redoing their beauty floors and one of the big addition is men’s skincare. ‘Gender neutral’ brands like The Ordinary still seem to be more female driven as it seems men’s skincare needs a label on it, and the default belief is that these products are for women otherwise. Another growing industry I’m scared/fascinated by is the teen skincare market. Would love to read something on that too Jess!
This guest column is *chef’s kiss.* Love brands mean a lot - thanks Jared!
Buying your skincare in the Kroger aisle is damn near gender neutral!
Very interesting piece. Thank you, Jessica and Jared!
I'm 70 so my men are old too. It's a market generally they don't care about unless shaving is a problem. The answer then is a beard. Some men care and will make the effort but consistency is a problem and I find generally won't pay much for it. They don't find value - so no time and effort and $. Things are changing and men are getting the education. Surratt Beauty is illuminating the way. Many many men will likely take the call as far as good grooming, some spf. We will never not primp and preen as humans do.
