My favorite days are the ones where I wake up to The Unpublishable in my inbox. Completely agree with Kate on the "life-changing" descriptor of Jessica's work. Also, I would purchase the app of Jessica speaking out opposite affirmations to me every morning!
Also, just wanted to send some internet love for what you’re going through with your mom. (And internet love to your mom too.) My dad died of cancer last year and I spent a lot of time with him at the end. It’s just hard.
I come here for the dismantling and dissection of pervasive beauty ideals, and stay for the existential pondering on the (non)existence of the self :) ... seriously, you are right on about the use of products to create an image, rather than express a self. Thank you for writing this!
Jess, I am so sorry to hear of your mother’s illness. Loved these interviews, and know whether women reach out or not, what you are saying is sinking in…
You mentioned in the first interview that you used to be very confident, pretty sassy, full of conviction in your writing but Instagram changed that and that felt like a negative outcome to you (at least at first). But I think when a person conveys some level of humility it actually makes them appear more intelligent, and makes them more persuasive too. (Research supports the latter as well, according to the book Think Again.) That’s how you come across in your writing now - intelligent and persuasive! So I think that’s an overall positive change! :)
Great interviews! Jessica, you might enjoy the book "You and Your Profile" by Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul J. D'Ambrosio. It's a very thought-provoking read about identity construction and the benefits - informed by the Chinese philosophical tradition - of holding our identities lightly.
Something is piquing interest in what Jess has to say and I’m so happy to see it’s spreading! Maybe she CAN change the world, nothingness not withstanding!
you are the voice I've been searching for! so SO glad i found your newsletter. i've been trying to talk to my circle of people about all of this and it's returned with blank stares and awkward silence. no one wants to embrace natural and fight beauty consumerism in my realm. i'll quickly be recommending your site as my reinforcer! the validation of your words and research are encouraging. please keep going.

Glad I am not the only one ruminating on the nothingness of being!
The collective 💯
Ah! Yay! It was such a pleasure (is it too much to say honour??) to talk to you. Thank you so much for sharing xx
