Oh the irony, my initials are SPF and I am allergic to most sunscreen. I have been wearing hats and mineral coverage for years.

I spent two days tossing old merch from my mother’s bathroom while helping them pack up for their move. That is not counting all the BS she gave me from beauty companies over the years. This is nothing new, it is just now more widespread and available. It used to be something only luxury brands could afford to do for customers. Now brand wants to have you pimp their products and make you feel special for doing so.

It is a disgrace.

Thanks for your service to our planet and our future Jessica.

Every. Single. Word. More "stuff" that gets dumped in landfill or incinerated, probably packaged and shipped to your doorstep in plastic because why not? Code Red for Humanity. Code. Red.

I always thought branded items should come at a discount because I would be the walking sandwich board for their marketing. No thank you. And gawd bless the $9 cotton washable bucket hat you can get anywhere (finally found a brand that will fit my small melon). When I put one on at lunch, my friend snarkily said to me, "Really embracing that Diane Keaton phase of your life." Yes, MFer, I am. xo

Your life can change when you realize that you have a lot - if not all - that you really need. When shopping, I think about what I already have that is comparable. It seems simple but it really is a game changer. I have been more creative with my resources AND of course, have saved money. I'd rather read a book then going shopping for "things," if it can be avoided. As for hats, I was vacation last week in Scotland and found a hat at a vintage shop that truly spoke to me!! It was a one-of-a-kind piece from circa 1960 that I could keep forever and my conscience feels better knowing that it has already had a long life. I try so hard to be intentional with my purchases.

OH MY, I could not even begin to tell you the amount of branded merch I've received from alleged *green* and *climate conscious* brands that I did not even ask for nor use and just had to donate. I am so glad this post was written and it's so timely with branded hats being churned out for summer. We love the sun <3

YES! We all have too many hats already. I will be wearing ones I already own and not worrying whether or not they're on trend.

Not to mention most hats don’t even shield my whole face from the sun. Here take this silly hat and shield the top part of your forehead from the sun. :)

Thanks for this! All this merch has a price. I freely admit I love Jones Road Beauty but was disappointed they got on the merch bandwagon, too. Eh tu?

The way Glossier hoodies had a chokehold on Gen Z girlies already had me feeling queasy, now it's all over hats too?!

This makes me curious about how you approach buying clothes and shoes. I like Pact but it’s hard to feel certain about any brand and how they’re manufacturing stuff.

Dramatic, but true — agree! With claims like that, makes me think sun-protective wear should be regulated by the FDA like sunscreen.

“You probably already have a hat; wear THAT ONE” hysterically funny but will we? I’m all for brands stopping the merchandising it way to expensive anyway! 😅

I always forget to wear a hat but I usually have a scarf so when it gets too hot or too cold, I wrap my head in my scarf for protection. I've had quite a few "OMG I didn't know you wear the headscarf??!" over the years (I'm a French, Algerian Muslim woman) and it always boggles me how quickly we can accept a brand's product as "sacred" or "iconic" but actual religion should be hush hush.

I digress, all I originally wanted to say was that bucket hats are and always have been awful.

Can we talk about the branded merch that gets sent out in PR packages? I’ve seen so many unboxing videos where people get sent a bunch of makeup or skincare along with exclusive items that are not for sale to the general public at this time. Which makes everyone want them and then, surprise! They release branded stuff and it sells out immediately.
